Founded by entertainment + media veteran, Claire Ratliff, the laughing penguin was conceived to meet the unique needs of small business, independent record labels, producers and artists. When it was time to hang out her shingle, Claire drew on her own experience as an independent artist and entrepreneur, as well as a marketer. She recognizes how important it is to find professional and affordable promotion services. Over time, the client focus broadened to encompass more authors, health & wellness and lifestyle brands.

A former marketer with Columbia Pictures of Burbank, CA, Ratliff also enjoyed stints as a PR consultant and corporate marketing executive in addition to performing and songwriting. She has held posts in print media, graphic design, radio/video production, event planning and as a television host. Her articles have appeared in trade journals, and she is a dynamic speaker on the topic of PR and marketing.

In 2015, Nashville native Jazz Godard joined the team as assistant publicist, with a background in integrative marketing, copywriting, and branding, as well as experience in music production and publishing. After years of marketing consulting and providing internal communications + operational support for small businesses in Nashville, Jazz became Partner to Claire at laughing penguin publicity in 2021.
